Points and Your Delaware County Ticket

Traffic convictions in Delaware County are reported to the Ohio BMV. Under Section 4510.036, every court must send an abstract of conviction to the BMV within ten days. The BMV adds points to your record based on the offense.

Two-point violations include most basic speeding tickets (10-29 mph over the limit) and common moving violations. Four-point violations cover reckless operation and speeding 30 or more over. Six-point violations include OVI, fleeing police, and leaving the scene of an accident. If you get two or more tickets from the same stop, points only count for the one with the highest value per Section 4510.036.

The BMV sends a warning at 6 points. Your license gets suspended at 12 points within two years. A driving course from an approved school can earn a 2-point credit. Check the Ohio Department of Public Safety at publicsafety.ohio.gov for approved providers.

Other Delaware County Court Offices

The county has several court divisions. The General and Domestic Relations division of the Common Pleas Court is at 110 North Sandusky Street in Delaware. Phone is (740) 833-2500. The Juvenile Division is at 140 North Sandusky Street, phone (740) 833-2600. The Probate Division sits on the third floor of the same building at (740) 833-2680.

Traffic cases normally don't go through these divisions. But if a traffic charge gets raised to a felony (like vehicular homicide or repeat OVI), it moves from the Municipal Court to the Common Pleas Court. The clerk's office at the Common Pleas Court then takes over the records for that case.

Paying Traffic Fines in Delaware County

Most minor traffic tickets can be paid without a court hearing. Check your citation for the fine amount and due date. You can pay at the Municipal Court or the clerk's office during business hours. Call (740) 203-1570 to ask about accepted payment methods.

Certain offenses require a court appearance. Under Ohio law, you cannot just pay and walk away from OVI charges, driving under suspension, leaving the scene of a crash, or going 30 mph or more over the limit. These cases need a hearing before the judge. The clerk will set a date for you to appear.

Court fees in Delaware County follow the schedule set by the Ohio Supreme Court. Standard court costs apply on top of any fines the judge orders. Late payments may result in additional fees. A bench warrant can issue if you fail to appear or fail to pay by the deadline. Contact the court early if you need more time.
